Creating jobs starts with stopping the spending Not since World War II has our children's and our grandchildren's future been more challenged. The American success model that has been the envy of the free world and that has maintained our freedom for more than 200 years now is headed in the wrong direction. Unemployment stands at record levels. The public debt is not sustainable. New taxes are not the answer. Creating private sector jobs is the only path to a long-lasting economic recovery. I have spent a lifetime creating jobs – as a small businessman, a city councilmember and mayor, and as your U.S. Representative. I have helped to create thousands of jobs since taking public office. For the past 20 months, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has pushed through law after law that grows the federal bureaucracy and the federal deficit at the expense of private-sector jobs. The $1 trillion stimulus package was sold on the promise that unemployment would not rise above 8 percent. It has been hovering near or above double-digits since last year. The only jobs that have been created in any quantity are government jobs. Government jobs do not grow the economy; they drain the economy. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, the IRS, the U.S. Department of Health Services, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Federation of Independent Business and many, many other organizations have warned of job-killing provisions in Speaker Pelosi’s $1 trillion health care law. While killing jobs on Main Street, Speaker Pelosi has been bailing out government workers and Wall Street. Our path to reverse this crisis is clear. We must cancel the failed stimulus program and use the unspent funds to pay down the deficit. We must repeal the health care law and replace it with commonsense health care reform that expands availability and decreases costs and that does not destroy our economy. We must stop rewarding greed, avarice and unacceptable risk with government bailouts and, instead, reward hardworking and honest small business men and women with lower taxes and reasonable and practical regulations so they have the resources to grow jobs. I have a documented track record of helping businesses create jobs – opening the doors to opportunity – and I have concrete proposals to return our country to prosperity.
